A Message from the President
Professor David Bellamy O.B.E, President BICSc
One of the things I consider to be of great importance is educating our young people to care for and protect the environment in which we all live. The Institute together with Johnson Diversey run a marvellous scheme which encourages this philosophy!
The David Bellamy Awards Programme is a competition designed to encourage schoolchildren to be aware of, and act positively towards, environmental cleanliness. Over 2,500 schools are invited to enter the competition, which incidentally is also kindly sponsored by Johnson Diversey and promoted by the Institute. It operates through planned curriculum based activities including the creation of an 'Environmental Cleanliness Charter', essays, pictures and other activities.
Children are tasked with plotting and measuring their progress. 2005 is the fifth year of the competition and the winning school will receive a cheque for £8,000, with the two runners up receiving £1,000 each, at the annual BCI Conference in September. I firmly believe in the four R's - Reading, Riting, Rithmatic and enviRonment. That is what the David Bellamy Schools Award is all about. Check it out - cleanliness of the right sort begins at school.
