The Cleaning Professionals Skills Suite was launched in March 2011 and over the last two years; Lead Assessors from Centres that are required to adopt CPSS as their method for training and education have attended a CPSS Conversion Workshop.
The Conversion Workshop was to outline what are the main features to the qualification, how it differs to previous BICSc schemes and how Assessors and organisations are to remain compliant.
This Bulletin covers some of the main points from the Conversion Workshop and should act as reminder or in some cases a recommendation for best practice. If you have not yet converted to CPSS, please speak to your Verification Support Coordinator (VSC) who can make the necessary arrangements.
- The Mandatory Units (MU1, MU2 and MU3, formerly known as AA1, AA2 and AA3) skills must be successfully and fully completed before any other assessment is conducted. A suitable and reasonable amount of time should be set aside for the training and assessment for each of the Mandatory Units for each candidate. Each skill has a minimum and maximum assessment time, which the candidate must meet when being assessed in that skill. A full list of timings can be found in the Assessment Kit.
- Once the Mandatory Units have been completed, a BICSc Licence to Practice can be applied for by using the form supplied in the Assessment Kit. A passport sized style digital (or hard copy) photograph must accompany the application form as BICSc will not process without one. Alternative arrangements must be previously agreed if a photo cannot be supplied due to security issues.
- Please ensure you supply BICSc with a mobile number and or email address, as this will be our method of contacting the individual with BICS information and also to remind them the what is to be done before their Licence expires.
- Hand Hygiene should be carried out prior to start and at the end of every skill assessment in accordance with the organisational policy. This policy can be an organisational policy or local policy amongst the Assessment Team. Whatever the policy it should be standard across the organisation, whether that is the use of soap and water, hand Sanitiser or both.
- The Assessment Team should be fully conversant with and apply the Rules and Regulations found in each of the Assessment Kits. Some Centres find that reviewing a section at each Standardisation Meeting will assist them to meet compliance.
- The Assessment Kit contains an updated Recommended Colour Coding Chart. Your organisation must have Colour Coding Policy and must follow it during the assessment. This does not have to be the BICSc recommendation – but there must be an identifiable policy in place.
- The Assessment Kit contains a recommended dilution chart to help you. Your VSC will be paying close attention to the correct use of dilution rates during assessments. It is suggested that you request a dilution chart from your Chemical supplier.
- Assessors can use either the Single or Multiple Marking Sheets during an assessment; all sections of the Marking Sheets must be completed. The completion of marking sheets electronically is not currently accepted.
- Assessors must ensure that Risk Assessments/Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) are made available to the candidate for each assessment conducted. This is to allow the candidate to determine the potential risks and to select, check and wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the assessment.
- Any warning signs used during an assessment must be cleaned before the end of the assessment, paying close attention to the areas which come in contact with the ground and touch points. Failure to do so must result in an instant fail.
- Assessors should not be providing candidates with equipment and materials which are faulty and or unclean. Clean equipment can reduce the risk of cross contamination and promote a professional image.
- Some Tasks which were listed in previous BICSc schemes have been removed for health and safety reasons. Other Awarding Organisations are in a better position to provide accreditation for such skills as erecting Scaffolding.
- Candidates can be certificated in any combination of skills listed in the Cleaning Professionals Skills Suite. A certificate can list a maximum of 15 skills on the certificate.
- Standard Assessment Kits are supplied with Mandatory Unit and Core Skill assessment cards. Assessors that have skills which are featured in the technical sections e.g. as Hard Floors & Soft Furnishings must purchase the additional assessment card inserts. Please speak to BICSc Customer Services department to place your order.
- Assessment Kits will not be supplied to anyone who is not a BICSc Licenced Assessor. It is the responsibility of the individual Assessor and the Centre’s Lead Assessor to inform BICSc at their earliest convenience, if a Licenced Assessor leaves the organisation or is no longer required to be a Licenced Assessor.
- The Lead Assessor is required to carry out at least two Peer Assessments with each of the Licenced Assessors linked their Centre within a 12 month Audit period. Evidence of each peer assessment will be required at each Annual Audit. Please speak to your VSC if you are unsure what evidence is required; however a future Bulletin will cover this in more detail.
- If you are unsure over any other aspect in the delivery of the CPSS Skills please speak to your Verification Support Coordinator. A future Bulletins will cover how the CPSS Mandatory Units should trained and assessed in more detail.
