18. Renewing the Licence to Practice with RU1 - BICSc

The recommended unit RU1 has now been introduced as a means for the renewal of the Licence to Practice PBICSc.

The unit has aspects from Mandatory Units 1, 2 and 3 incorporated as well as other relevant assessment points.

The unit has been designed to allow the candidate to provide both oral and practical demonstrations of their knowledge and understanding during the assessment.

The assessment of RU1 will be conducted in the same manner as any other Mandatory or skill assessment with the assessor marking the candidate against the skills assessment card using the marking sheet.

Below is a selection of explanations and demonstrations which the candidate would be expected to provide during the assessment.
- Assessment point 1. The candidate may indicate a chart outlining the correct hand hygiene procedure and subsequently follow the instructions by washing their hands at the same time the candidate may cover
- assessmentpoint 2 by explaining why cuts and abrasions should be covered.
- Assessment point 3.The candidate must demonstrate how they would place / locate the warning sign and which side should be facing relevant to the skill they are undertaking (wet / dry) and why warning signs must be used (trip hazard or slip)
- Assessment point 4. The candidate must demonstrate by reading the COSHH information relevant to a chosen cleaning agent and explain why they are reading it and what information they are looking for (PPE)
- Assessment point 5. The candidate should have access to both risk assessments and SSOW and refer to these during the assessment pointing out the differences and what they are and why they need to know.
- Assessment point 6. Ventilation does not form part of this assessment however candidates are expected to explain when they would ventilate and why (diluting chemicals, enclosed space to ensure air flow to dispense any build up of fumes) the candidate may demonstrate by opening a window or door although an explanation will suffice.
- Assessment point 7. The candidate must use a dilution chart and explain how this is used to calculate the amount of chemical required and show which equipment they would use to measure the chemical chosen for dilution.
- Assessment point 8. The candidate must explain why personal protective equipment must be used and provide examples of PPE (gloves, masks, tabards)
- Assessment point 9. The candidate must know the local colour code policy and provide equipment / materials that are relevant to that area (red for toilets or other chosen colour)
- Assessment point 10. The candidate must demonstrate how they would check equipment / materials and explain what the reporting procedure is for faulty items (damage to cables, refuse sacks that are not bonded etc)
- Assessment point 11. The candidate may have a circuit breaker and explain when they would use if the circuit is not protected by other means
- Assessment point 12. The candidate should physically check a lead (Suction cleaner or other electrical piece of equipment) and explain what they are looking for. Following this the candidate should demonstrate the positioning of the leads whilst in use.
- Assessment point 13. The candidate must demonstrate how to lift a box and explain why it is important to lift in this manner.
- Assessment point 14. The candidate can demonstrate where they would store an item subject to size and weight and explain why they have chosen the area to place the item on.
- Assessment point 15. The candidate must demonstrate where to store chemicals and explain the reason why they have chosen to place it in a particular area ( chemical interaction, weight etc)
- Assessment point 16. The candidate must demonstrate how they would store equipment/ materials and why ( do not store suction cleaners next to water, do not mix cloths/ mop heads reasons water and electric equipment do not mix and risk of cross contamination)
- Assessment point 17. Candidates must be able to explain if they suspected mouse droppings or fly infestation and why they must report this. Candidates must also explain the importance of reporting damaged surfaces.
- Assessment point 18. Candidates must be able to explain why they clean in this manner (clean – dirty) and what the consequences may be for failure to follow a systematic approach ( insufficient cleaning time, footfall preventing cleaning altogether, cross contamination)
- Assessment point 19. The candidate must explain how they fill in the relevant form or reporting procedure.
- Assessment point 20. The candidate must demonstrate how they would clean an item of equipment prior to storing as well as removing and storing relevant PPE following cleaning and drying.
- Assessment point 21. Self explanatory.
- Assessment point 22. Self explanatory.
- Assessment point 23. Self explanatory.
- Assessment point 24. Self explanatory.
In addition to RU1 being used as a means of renewing the Licence to Practice it may also be used as an individual skill to support candidates who carry on to the specialist skills through time.

Candidates are still permitted to renew their Licence to Practice using the existing Mandatory units should the wish to do so.

It should be noted that whilst it is an individual choice to renew your LTP by not doing so will prevent any further certificates being issued.

On renewal of the Licence to Practice candidate photographs which have previously been supplied electronically may still be available for use at the renewal point however candidates may also supply updated photographs for use.

N.B Licence to Practice cards will not be issued without a photograph.

The centre verifier will assess the lead Assessor at the annual audit on the RU1 unit it is then the lead assessor’s responsibility to cascade the training and assessment to any other assessors.
