2014 was a particularly difficult trading year for the Institute working against falling incomes and predicted losses e.g. the Awards Dinner and some exceptional costs, we continued to invest in our future, such as new systems and products.
By the third quarter our targets were reviewed again and this policy was no longer deemed sustainable. Further and more aggressive cost cutting was embarked upon which unfortunately resulted in some unplanned redundancies.
Investment was also scaled back to a minimum and capital projects such as an upgrade of the BICSc Website etc. were put on hold.
As you are all no doubt aware, The British Institute of cleaning Science is a not for profit organisation, we need however to make a suitable trading surplus to allow investment for the future. We did not meet this requirement in 2014 with a deficit shown in our accounts. We have never attracted Government funding for our training programmes and this is not likely to change. Also the cleaning industry is one of the least controlled and co-ordinated in the United Kingdom. With this in mind we (The Institute) need to look to new markets and new products to grow our organisation. There is a particular concern with the lack of active Branches and the promotion of education.
The Institute has changed in the last five years, less of our revenue is derived from certificates and experience membership, however turnover is somewhat static.
Licence to Practice has become an Industry leader with over 10,000 Cleaning Operatives completing their mandatory units since its inception.
The institute needs to adapt to the changing market conditions and become less bureaucratic and more dynamic, to this end the Senior Management Team has developed a draft 5-year plan to commence January 2016. Subject to the Council review day in October 2015 this will allow us to move forward using our heritage as a guide and not an anchor.
I am happy to report that the first half of 2015 has seen us achieve plan and we are not only in surplus but also in line with budget at this point.
I am convinced that working with the council, BICSc can become the natural choice for the Cleaning Industry:
