BICSc Successes of 2023 – End of Year Review and Looking Forward to 2024

The start of a new year brings with it anticipation of new possibilities and is also a time for reflection to review some of the previous year’s highlights.

With an ever evolving commercial climate and new developments within the professional cleaning industry, there has been much to celebrate from BICSc activities and achievements in 2023.

Some of the standout successes include the launch of the Cleaning & Hygiene Audit App, announced at the London Cleaning Show, and our successful webinar entitled Is Bleach the Answer with Dr Andrew Kemp. You can watch the webinar now https://www.bics.org.uk/is-bleach-the-answer-watch-the-webinar-now/

The Cleaning & Hygiene Audit App is helping to revolutionise the industry and enables anybody to undertake a cleaning and hygiene audit. In addition to a cleaning inspection, an audit also focuses on an in-depth check of processes, systems, paperwork, policies, areas included in the cleaning specification, staff behaviours and appearance, and the standard of the equipment available to the cleaning operatives. In facilities where audits are carried out regularly, it is proven that the quality of the cleaning improves, and, frequently, is the start of a cycle of continuing increased standards.

The app has been referred to as a “game changer” within the sector and is incredibly easy to use. We offer a free online app training course which outlines the basis of an audit and takes an in-depth look at the app in action to give you the option to discover how suitable the app is for you and your workplace. Our Cleaning Supervisor’s Certificate continues to go from strength to strength with over 140 enrolments to date and 39 passes already. It is proving very popular; we continue to receive regular sign ups and have had excellent feedback and delighted with how it is all progressing.

We released some enhancements to the CPSS App at the start of the year and the next round of enhancements are currently undergoing testing before being introduced early in the New Year. To make processes more efficient we have released more rolled skills for our assessors, which have been unanimously well received.

In our long established history BICSc had gained a renowned reputation for its expertise and training, and that ethos, which puts the cleaning operative at the heart of everything we do, continues to be part of our mission to ensure first class training is accessible to all. This is why we are also celebrating the fact that in 2023 alone more than 23,000 courses have been completed. It is a significant achievement.

Other momentous moments included the individual member elections and the announcement of our new Chair, Soo Bartholomew, our phenomenally successful BICSc awards, which were a sell out, and our conference in December was another success.

Our world renowned awards continue to recognise the exceptional and exemplary efforts of industry stars from the global professional cleaning community.

Star of TV’s The Chase, Paul Sinha, professional quizzer, comedian, doctor and broadcaster, was the celebrity host who entertained guests at the industry-leading awards ceremony.

The Institute was inundated with entries for this year’s awards, with winners announced at the ceremony staged at The Forest of Arden Hotel & Country Club.

Neil Spencer-Cook, BICSc Group Managing Director, said: “We were delighted to be able to congratulate our overall winners on the night of our annual awards, which was an outstanding success.

“We are proud that the BICSc Awards showcases and celebrates the very best talent from the worldwide professional cleaning community, and it was a privilege to share the success of everyone who won. Our fantastic sponsors ensured the event was the perfect way to recognise and reward the individuals and organisations who were worthy winners of these prestigious awards. Plans are already underway for the BICSc Awards for 2024!”

We are increasing our sustainability efforts across the organisation by encouraging assessments via the app and removing submissions by paper. Offering a mix of online and face-to-face audits minimises people having to travel for in person assessments.

We are delighted our market reach is growing internationally, especially in Saudi Arabia where we are market leaders in the region.

During a year of changes the industry welcomed the introduction of the Apprenticeship for the sector, another step in the right direction to inspiring the next generation of young people to consider careers in the cleaning community.

A movement BICSc has long supported with our very own Kelsey Hargreaves leading the charge to change the sector for the better. As our youth ambassador, Kelsey, with the support of team BICSc, is ensuring the youth voice is heard and her passion to encourage young people into the industry is paving the way with BICSc announcing its recent significant investment to fund an online hub on the Youth Employment UK website.

Youth Ambassador and Technical Specialist, Kelsey Hargreaves, said: “I wanted to help make significant changes to encourage younger people to join the cleaning industry to inspire the next generation to consider some of the many incredible careers in the cleaning industry by helping raise awareness.

“It is amazing BICSc has provided the funding for the online hub that will become a dedicated website which will be accessed by millions of young people each year.”

By investing thousands of pounds BICSc announced the launch of the Cleaning Industry Careers Guide https://www.youthemployment.org.uk/careers-hub-sector/cleaning-industry-careers-bicsc/ at our recent conference, which was a standout success.

BICSc continues to lead the industry with its innovative and pioneering approach and we were delighted to be able to dedicate the substantial investment to fund this incredibly important online option to help further engage with the younger generation. Kelsey and the team continue to strive to shine a spotlight on the many career opportunities there are within the cleaning community worldwide.

BICSc also reached a significant milestone in 2023 with the Virtual Training Suite, which has seen over 57,000 enrollments on courses, a fantastic achievement that has surpassed all our expectations. Find out more here https://www.bics.org.uk/welcome-to-the-bbs-virtual-training-suite/

This year we were proud to be involved in the Clean and Tidy Home Show offering our expertise and top tips to get the BICSc message out to the domestic market and in particular domestic cleaning operatives. The show, staged at ExCel, London in October included an array of cleanfluencers and industry leading exhibitors including BICSc.

BICSc Group Managing Director, Neil Spencer-Cook, and Commercial Director, Denise Hanson, were keynote speakers at the popular event leading numerous Ask An Expert sessions to provide top tips on all aspects of keeping homes clean and tidy.

Neil Spencer-Cook, BICSc Group Managing Director, said: “We were delighted to be guest speakers at this year’s Clean & Tidy Home Show. Sharing our extensive expertise and knowledge with the wider community demonstrates how BICSc continues to help raise cleaning standards within the professional and domestic sector.”

As the largest independent, professional and educational body within the cleaning industry, we continue to demonstrate how we are at the forefront of industry progress and innovation with the recent introduction of our free course on robotics. The course called, Robotics – I Am Your Automatic Cleaner is ideal for those interested in cleaning robotics and how they are implemented within the cleaning industry. The short course details the types of robotics available and the considerations to explore before buying them. Find our more here https://bbs-virtual-training.thinkific.com/courses/Robotics

BICSc Group Managing Director, Neil Spencer-Cook, concluded: “It has been a year of two halves and taking the helm at BICSc has tested me and made me think differently, and I am confident we continue to move in the right direction and will continue this as we go into 2024, looking at innovation and the environmental impact of cleaning and how we can enhance our training further to support the general industry and our assessors as well.

“Our focus for 2024 will be to continue the development of our youth engagement, exploring new markets while ensuring our current offering is fit for the current market, taking into account innovation and environmental impacts alongside working collaboratively with other organisations within the industry.”
