University of Sussex embraces BICSc training

Sussex Estates and Facilities Partnership

In January 2014 the University of Sussex and Interserve teamed up to create the Sussex Estates and Facilities Partnership. This marked an exciting new chapter in the delivery of the University’s Estates and Facilities Management (EFM) services. The partnership aimed to improve the campus experience for students and all campus users, develop staff and their careers, making the University of Sussex the shining example of EFM in the university sector. Transferring employees from University of Sussex and sub-contractors received a warm welcome to the partnership. In transferring to Sussex Estates and Facilities, they would then be working for a company where EFM services are not merely a supporting activity, but where their skilful delivery is the core focus. Every role was front-of-house with the responsibility to contribute to a positive experience for all campus users.

Commitment to training

Sussex Estates and Facilities LLP (SEF) is committed to improving cleaning standards across the University of Sussex Estate. They decided to address this issue by embracing the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) ‘Best Practice,’ encouraging all cleaning operatives to train in new skills and the creation of a ‘Centre of Excellence’ at the University of Sussex.

The training

The Sussex Estates and Facilities Partnership created a comprehensive training programme. Initially, seven building managers were trained to become BICSc Licenced Assessors and then employees were put through the BICSc Licence to Practice (PBICSc) course.

We are pleased to announce that Sussex Estates and Facilities LLP have now completed the delivery of its first phase of BICSc training and 130 member of the cleaning/housekeeping team have achieved their Licence to Practices (PBICSc) qualification.

Hamid Ghadry Lead Assessor stated, “The contribution and dedication of our BICSc Assessors has been exemplary and worthy of special praise. I would also like to say a huge thank you to our organisation Sussex Estates and Facilities LLP and the University of Sussex for the commitment and support for this project. This shows the core beliefs and commitment of the University of Sussex in providing excellent services by training and developing its employees to BICSc standards and being among an elite group of universities within the country. I, as BICSc Champion, applaud such vision and commitment and I am proud to be a part of our organisation.”
